Last year our season depended on the equivalent of this result, we unfortunately lost. This season we were determined to get a good result. After last weeks 11-0 win over the Steelkings, the Huskies locker room spirits were high.
The game got off to a ropey start after issues with setting up the scoreboard in the arena, but after an extended warm up, the game got under way. Both teams on paper are very close and with not much between them, sets up a fantastic action packed game.
The first period was two way hockey, both teams trying out each others defences and playing some great hockey. Manchester drew first blood with a goal from Tyler Christopher assisted by Paul Furber. Shortly after was a goal by Lloyd Woodyatt. This unsettled Phoenix but they held it together and tightened their defence and attack Cardiff on the break. Cardiff started to spread out their play and use the passing game to their advantage. Finishing the period Paul Furber slotted in a lovely goal assisted by Tyler Christopher.
The second period Cardiff started to open the phoenix up. Manchester started leaving gaps in their play and their heads began to drop. The Huskies used this as an advantage and kept the score board ticking with a double whammy from Tyler Christopher assisted by Jon Geloudec and Paul Furber. Even with their heads down Manchester were still counter attacking strongly and Alex Weaver had to put in some fantastic saves between the pipes.
The third period showed fatigue on both teams. Both teams were putting in some fantastic shots on net with some amazing saves from Alex Weaver and Doug Hankinson. Paul Furber finished the score board with a hatrick assisted by Lloyd Woodyatt and Tyler Christopher.
The scoreboard does not reflect how close this game was. Phoenix will play like a different team when we visit them in Manchester. The Huskies played a fantastic team passing game and used their players wisely, we look forward to playing the league champions Peterborough Phantoms for our 3rd game on the bounce next week.
